It's been surprising to me that sangria is not a common beverage along the Camino. I've traveled nearly 400 miles and have had it available only three times. Most bars appease you by offering red wine mixed with sparkling water and throwing in a slice of citrus fruit. By far the tastiest "real" sangria was at the Los Angeles Bar in Hospital de Orbigo. The bartender had at least a cup of sugar in a pitcher filled with orange slices, adding a splash of 7 up, a gush of Cointreau and the rest, wine. Yum!! Today my sangria dreams were met again at El Puente Peregrino in Trabadelo.
Needing a rest day and a bit of spoiling, I walked 18k to this oasis of luxury. The pension run by Elly of Rotterdam, is a three room "hotel" with an amazing restaurant. After soaking 45 minutes in a hot bath, I enjoyed a sangria and the most amazing pasta dish for lunch. A long nap and feeling a bit restored, I am now indulging in my second. Gracias Elly!!
Today's short walk took me through beautiful vineyards and along the river.
In Villafranca Del Bierzo I found a church with another Puerta del Perdón (Door of Forgiveness) for pilgrims unable to continue to Santiago. The first one had been in León.
I'll enjoy this little rejuvenation, tomorrow it's back into the mountains, this time the coastal range, where the westerly winds come from across the Atlantic. Approaching the sea step by step...
