There was a very simple church along the way with St. James to bless the path towards La Cruz de Ferro. The simplicity of the interior highlighted the lesson of the Way.
At the Iron Cross, I left my blessing, brought from home.
The stones and tokens put there by thousands of pilgrims.
Continuing the mountain path I entered Acebo, a typical mountain village with one Main Street and accommodations for pilgrims. I stayed in Apostol Santiago and shared a communal meal of lentil soup with some familiar faces. Mike and Anna from Claremont and my honeymooning Japanese friends sat amidst others from Italy, France, Slovenia, Germany and Austrailia. It amazes me how we all communicate through interpreters, hand and feet, and thankfully, most commonly, English. The hostilers urged us outside around 9:30 to see the sun set in the west. Most too tired, a few of us set off and were grateful we had. The view from the park nearby was absolutely stunning!!
The journey down the mountain reminded me again of our hills at home. And the sight of Molinaseca was like a mirage in the desert.
This is a town I would love to revisit. Cafes and restaurants along the river. Main narrow street through homes and stores. Very nice! I took a detour on the way into Ponferrada and saw a Roman water fountain still functioning, but I wasn't willing to try it.
Ponferrada is another big town with lots of history tied to the Knights Templar. The 12th century castle has been extensively restored and now holds a museum.
I had time to take in mass at the Basìlica de la Encina, 16th century, and then had lunch in the square. Deciding to ditch the city, I hit the road again. It was rather late in the day for an additional 17k to the next Alburgue. Making the day's total 34, I arrived in Cacabelos about 3:15. It had been another hot day and I was ready for rest. The alburgue, Las Augustias, surrounds a church and has 2 bed chalet style dorm rooms in a semi circle courtyard. Primitive but functional, the downside is the 3k round trip walk for dinner. But hunger drives me!!
